What is the significance of assembly language and Java for developing=20
cryptographic applications, such as GnuPG?

Is there any observable trend to move away from C to, for example, C++ an=
d/or=20
Java (now that there is a free implementation of Java -- Kaffe)?

(I am new to cryptography, so I asked these questions out of curiosity.=20
