GPGME is propably the solution. But it's not a HOWTO. On the other
hand the library contains a lot of example code which makes it more
easier to understand it. There is also a german paper that describes
the GPG MUA integration with GPGME. 

Another guy also asked a similar question, so I guess you can
find the URL of the doc file in the mailing list archive. 
And information about GPGME are located on the gnupg.org site.
