gpg 1.06 extremly slow

Hello. 

As soon as I invoke gpg --edit, its unbelievable slow. It uses 100% 
CPU for several minutes until it turns oup the prompt. Nearly every
action taken after that also takes this long. Happens on different 
machines. pubkey contains 174 keys.

Here's what time says, time from starting to prompt and quit.
real    8m7.520s
user    1m16.360s
sys     6m30.180s

I mean that IS real slow. 

strace turns up thousands of these:
_llseek(6, 50520, [50520], SEEK_SET)    = 0                                     
read(6, "\4\0\0\0\0\201\0\0\4\362\0\0\0\0\0\0\4\361\3\0a\177L\373"..., 40) = 40 
Some 1536020 times..
