Receiver lost secret key and cannot read - neither can I

Well, no. That's the whole purpose of encryption... Only the secret
key can decrypt.

Yes: Always encrypt to *both* the recipient of the message and
yourself. Add to your ~/.gnupg/options:

encrypt-to your_key_id
