I don't have a clue.  If you're curious, you might try asking on the
PGP-Users list[1].  Several of the PGP developers and officers are on that
list.  Someone there might be able to provide some insight as to why they
say that.  It might just be that their web team and marketing people are
clueless about GnuPG.
