Interesting issue with empty files

I am signing and encrypting an empty file using 'gpg -se -r profile
filename' and sending to over to someone else.  When they decrypt it using
PGP, they don't get any errors or warnings or anything, but also, no empty
file...

Has anyone run into this before?  Any work-arounds?
