I think you want the digest-algo option:

       --digest-algo name
                 Use name as the message digest algorithm. Running the program
                 with  the  command --version yields a list of supported algo-
                 rithms.

It's in the man page; search for digest-algo.

I don't think either has been "broken".  There is some speculation that
multiple inputs might have the same md5 checksum, but as far as I know
no one has come up with an example.  I've heard that SHA-1 is less
likely to produce those conflicts.
