The backend - Aegypten won't compile. I think I got as far as ksba before the
compile went into a tail-spin.

Aha, interesting. Did you build the complete tree from source, or did you use
a Debian package for cryptplug, gpgme and libgpgerror0?
Debian kernel: 2.4.23-1-686
Debian dist: testing
libgpg-error0 0.6-0.1
libgpg-error-dev 0.6-0.1
cryptplug 0.3.16-1
cryptplug-dev 0.3.16-1
libgpgme6 0.3.15-1
libqt3-mt-dev 3:3.2.3-2
qt3-dev-tools 3:3.2.3-2
glib2.0 2.2.3-1 (libglib2.0-0)
libglib2.0-dev 2.2.3-1
Source:
libksba-0.9.1.tar.gz
newpg-0.9.4.tar.gz
It halts at newpg.
When I last tried to get it to work, the code appeared OK but the packages
don't provide the error code definitions - ksba just redefines the errors as
gnupg macros which in turn are not defined by the Debian packages.
I'm afraid I'm swamped with other work at the moment and I am not likely to
have time to do a build from source for a few weeks.

However, here's the output that causes the halt:
newpg-0.9.4 $ make

If there's an obvious problem, I'll pursue it - just not right now.
:-)
I've got pinentry compiled and installed - in case I get gpg-agent running.
./configure --enable-pinentry-qt --with-qt-dir=/usr/share/qt3
