It appears that the problem has been fixed somewhere in mutt. In my
version 1.5.5.1+cvs20040105i (2003-11-05) from Debian Sid I get a
warning that part of the message is unsigned on mutt's status line. I am
not sure what message it produces if the partially unsigned message
fails to verify.
