Wipe function details

Hi,

I'd like to know how the wipe function is implemented on GnuPG 1.2.4 : how many
passes are performed, which patterns are used and what is the order...Has
someone performed advanced tests, what is the best known method to erase data ?
It's quite difficult to find detailed information about it on the net. Hope
someone here has information.
