renewing of expired signatures

It depends on what version of GnuPG you are talking about. For over
two years now, (since version 1.3.3 in October 2003), GnuPG will
prompt you with:
Your current signature on "(whatever)"
has expired.
Do you want to issue a new signature to replace the expired one? (y/N)
