I get the same run as user, I'd forgot to put that in:

[chris at localhost ~]$ gpg-agent
gpg-agent[27605]: can't connect to `/home/chris/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent': No such 
file or directory
gpg-agent: no gpg-agent running in this session
gpg-agent: secmem usage: 0/32768 bytes in 0 blocks
