Oh. OK, please pick an option:

1. restore `$abs_top_builddir` and plumb it to all currently existing test subdirs
2. restore `$abs_top_builddir` to just those test subdirs that currently rely on it indirectly
3. resolve and cache abspath at script-sourcing time; leave a comment prescribing to source it before changing directory
4. use `$top_builddir` (current MR's state) + leave a comment in the sourced file to not change directory when calling functions

or propose more variants.
