Adding random thought to further clarify this bug. Using ReadFile() on windows with a synchronous non-NULL lpOverlapped would work for win32, so it is not like it is impossible, I just don't know what approach would be favoured (i.e. make some header inlined pread() for windows which uses ReadFile() or something).
