Ok, I upgraded to automake 1.7 too and, (suprinsingly) it works for me :-)

Looks like you don't have the proper develoment packages installed. Do you
have gettext and the gtk-devel package for GTK+2 installed?

I think (and hope) all those are caused by aclocal failing above.

Try to install both packages I mentioned (gettext and whatever gtk2-dev is
called on Suse), and then we'll see what's the next problem :-)
