Problems compiling GPA

Alright, downloaded the right one now and upgraded to automake 1.7. Now,
when I run autogen.sh, I get the output:

  aclocal: configure.ac: 121: macro `AM_GNU_GETTEXT' not found in library
  aclocal: configure.ac: 132: macro `AM_PATH_GTK_2_0' not found in library
  autoheader: error: AC_CONFIG_HEADERS not found in configure.ac
  configure.ac: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE' must be used
  automake: no proper implementation of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE was found,
  automake: probably because aclocal.m4 is missing...
  automake: You should run aclocal to create this file, then
  automake: run automake again.
  /usr/local/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
  /usr/local/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: AMDEP does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
  /usr/local/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
  /usr/local/share/automake-1.7/am/depend2.am: AMDEP does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL

... thus, running configure yields the error message:

  ./configure: line 1272: syntax error near unexpected token `AM_CONFIG_HEADER(config.h)'
  ./configure: line 1272: `AM_CONFIG_HEADER(config.h)'

Okay -- what's wrong now? Running aclocal by hand doesn't change anything, especially it
doesn't create an aclocal.m4. It only gives the error message:

  aclocal: configure.ac: 132: macro `AM_PATH_GTK_2_0' not found in library

How to fix this?
