ah, there it is. Why not mention it in INSTALL?
That was where I looked for hints on W32. Then
I used the CVS webinterface to browse and
did not realize it is in the Attic.

thanks, but the patches *do* clutter the code with ifdefs ;-)

No, it is a matter of how Windows works. The documentation
is often unclear on details :-(
