I'm almost shure that there are binaries of GNU `make' at the main GNU
site. I cannot tell you anything about that error message.

It's really hard to compile GNU software if you have never done it
before. I tried to find HP-UX binaries in the Net - no luck, although a
'positive report' is published at GnuPG's main site on
"HPUX v9.x, v10.x and v11.0 with HPPA CPU".
I definitely agree that such a `compilation nightmare' has nothing to do
with `good peaces of software'. This is an example of side effect of GNU
software ;).
