It's a problem with the current release. The next release contains

That would help a bit, as would removing many of the keys from the trust
database. You could also ask GPG not to download unknown keys which
would prevent the set of keys increasing again and help with cached
trust values.
The more strongly connected your keyring the more time GPG will take to
walk the trust paths.
