BTW, gpgsm tries to figure out the format but is unable to detect
plain base64.  If you know the format you can give a hint by using
--assume-binary (for DER), --assume-armor (for PEM) or
--assume-base64.  To select the output format, you use --armor for PEM
or --base64 for plain Base64 encoding.  This works for all kinds of
input and output.
